Putting a Fireplace in Your Bedroom
In centuries past, long before the days of central heating, a bedroom’s only source of heat was some sort of open fire. Albeit a potential danger when left unguarded, especially near long night clothes, it was nevertheless an essential part of family life. For without a fire in the bedroom its occupants were doomed to be cold and damp; even risking their health and certainly their nocturnal comfort.
These days a bedroom fireplace can be installed to add some charm to your sleeping quarters. Fireplaces needn’t be confined to a family or living room and a beautifully designed fireplace can transform an otherwise dull or plain bedroom and give it a completely romantic facelift. There is something incredibly seductive about firelight!
If you decide to add a fireplace to your bedroom there are several things to take into account. First and foremost you will need to decide what type of fire you want. Do you want a real live fire or do you want a convincing fake fire?
Although a real log fire is wonderfully evocative at night, it does come with quite a few problems of its own. You will for instance need to cart logs upstairs and ash downstairs. There is more of a fire risk if it is left unguarded, it may smoke when there is a high wind and you will need to leave a window open to avoid a lack of oxygen when you are sleeping. But the main drawback is that you will need a chimney and very few houses these days have chimneys in the bedrooms.
Fortunately there is a very workable compromise which gives all the effect of a real fire but without the hassle – and that is to install a log or coal effect electric fire set into a marble or wood surround fireplace. Many modern day electric fireplaces are a stunningly beautiful addition to any room and in a bedroom they lend an air of old fashioned cosiness, as well as warmth.
Be sure to choose a mantle that matches the décor of the bedroom and doesn’t look too imposing or you will destroy the very effect you set out to create. In addition look out for decorations and fireplace accessories that emphasise the bedroom and fireplace.
You can enhance your bedroom fireplace with stylish decorations to compliment your existing bedroom décor. You may choose to hang a favourite picture or a mirror over the mantel or you could put several small vases of colourful flowers along the mantelshelf which change with the seasons. Even better lots of different burning candles can add to the atmosphere; but these must never be left unattended.
If you have cash to splash and enough space you could even put a plasma screen television above your fireplace. The only problem with doing this is that you could make your bedroom feel so inviting that you may never want to leave it, especially in winter.
