As the name suggest a Free Standing Electric Fire is intended to stand alone on a plinth, in a fireplace without any recess or against a flat wall where there is access to an electric socket. Some models have the option to be wall mounted if desired. They have a manufacturers fitted electric plug or alternatively can be wired directly into a fused spur. The use of a fused spur eliminates the need for a plug as the wires are connected in from the rear. This gives a neater appearance as the cable is normally concealed and all that is visible is an on/off switch. The fused spur also contains a suitably rated fuse which is easily replaced.
